Acupuncture and moxibustion
Acupuncture is a traditional oriental medicine technique that is focused on balancing the health and well-being of patients. The changes that pregnancy produces in the body and the alterations of some physiological functions of the organism produce discomfort in women that can be reduced and alleviated thanks to acupuncture. With the stimulation of certain points, it is sought to balance the energy of the body and thus, avoid and correct diseases and ailments.
The great advantage of this technique is its ability to solve problems such as vomiting and nausea, to relieve discomfort related to posture and weight of pregnant women such as sciatica or low back pain, relief of swollen legs, etc., avoiding taking medicines. In addition, acupuncture can also be of great help to correct the baby’s posture at the time of delivery as well as favour the necessary changes in the cervix so that it dilates normally.
Moxibustion, on the other hand, is also a traditional Chinese medicine technique, which consists of the stimulation of key points in the body through the application of heat.
Moxibustion uses the pressed root of the Artemisa Vulgaris plant, a herb that in Japanese receives the name of Moxa, from which the term used is derived. Mugwort is initially pressed, dried, and later rolled into mulberry paper, which can produce heat without creating a flame.
Moxibustion at the acupuncture point Bladder 67 (BL67) (Chinese name Zhiyin), located on the fifth toe, can correct fetal breech presentation. Women with a breech fetal presentation (seated babies) may request moxibustion treatment between 34 and 40 weeks. In neighbouring countries such as France and Germany, it is a therapeutic technique integrated into the national health system. For the WHO (World Health Organization), breech presentation falls within the conditions for which the efficacy of moxibustion has been proven (between 74 and 90% success rate).
It is a safe alternative, simple, and painless for pregnant women since it does not alter the well-being of the fetus.
